TV / VIDEO APPEARANCE TIPS

Are you, your employees, or facility about to go on camera?   Here's some basics (click on a Tab to select a topic).

Wardrobe:

  • Bright, Vibrant, Primary Colors
  • High contrast in wardrobe elements
  • Loud stripes
  • Tight, repeating patterns (Iike herringbone)

  • Muted earth tones, pastels, greys
  • Broad patterns are OK
  • Pinstripes are OK, if not highly contrasting
Reasons:
  • High-saturation colors, especially red, can "bleed" on VHS videotape, and other non-broadast formats.
  • High contrast in wardrobe elements are more difficult to light for TV
  • Stripes, checks and certain patterns can create an optical "moire"-  an electronic phenomenon that looks like cycling rainbows.   You've probably seen this in shots of NFL referees.
(and it looks worse in motion!)

Tight patterns and stripes can create a pulsating "moire".  Avoid them.
