A
Telly Award Winning Documentary
"In His Own
Words" |
 |
Harlan W. Butt
is a world-renowned Master Metalsmith and is a Regents Professor
at the University of North Texas where he has taught since 1976. When
his "Earth Beneath Our Feet" collection was on exhibit
at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, Jim Zura was enlisted to
create a documentary about this artist. |
 |
"Earth
Beneath Our Feet" is a series of metal / enamel works of art
that presents one of Harlan's chief inspirations: nature--
particularly the aspects that one observes when looking down. |

|
|
Much of
Harlan's work incorporates Haiku- a Japanese form of short poetry
that weaves words and short phrases in a unique rhythmic manner. |
|
"I
initially planned to create a script and do a voiceover," commented
Zura;
"but Harlan's captivating commentary provided everything we
needed to tell the story, 'In His Own Words.'" |

|
In addition
to the documentary, Zura also produced a "Catalog In Motion,"
featuring 33 of Harlan's works, each rotating 360 degrees in 25 seconds,
with a simultaneous top view. To accomplish this, Zura created a
variable-speed turntable that could be tuned to the exact desired speed.
